Good Morning !
Over the past week I have been seeing many social media posts and pics of Smelts !
What are smelts ?
Wikipedia tells us Smelts are a family of small fish, the Osmeridae, found in the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans, as well as rivers, streams and lakes in Europe,
Growing up close to salt water that actually froze thick enough to walk on ” Back in the 70’s /80’s ” smelting was a rather popular thing to do and could be time consuming in the elements on the best of days. Back in the days of Multiple line fishing , people could use many lines attached to a wooden ” horse” to fish smelts . Today only a single line is permitted , ice conditions in many areas of the Tri – Counties have not been favorable for smelt fishing in many years .
Most smelts sold by roadside vendors or grocery outlets are a product of New Brunswick.
