A long awaited expansion at Mariners Centre is starting to feel real.
Construction crews have started work on the new building next to the centre in Yarmouth.
It will house a pool, fitness centre and walking track.
Mariners Centre expansion committee chair Nicole Albright says excavation work started last week.
“They’re replacing some of the structural fill to prepare for the building pad, the excavation will continue on through the month of December,” said Albright, who is also the warden for the Municipality of Argyle.
She says the concrete placement for the foundation should start before the end of January.
Albright adds they will have a sod-turning ceremony in the near future.
“Seeing the equipment on the ground and the digging happening with the fencing up, this is real, this is happening, and I’m just so excited to see the finished product.”
The building is expected to be open in the fall of 2026.
