A thrilling Timber Cup final in Yarmouth.
Sunday’s championship game between the Sydney Academy Wildcats and Bayview Sharks went to overtime at Mariners Centre.
Sydney’s Cole Murphy would score the winner, giving them a 5-4 victory.
Murphy says it was a great moment.
“We grinded the whole game, we had an awesome tournament and went undefeated. The boys worked hard every shift and we got it done,” said Murphy on-ice after the game.
Bayview tied the game with 33 seconds left, but were unable to clinch their second-straight Timber Cup.
Sydney had to defeat Ecole NDA/Cape Breton Highlands in the morning’s semifinal to advance, while Bayview edged West Kings in the other semi.
The Wildcats are the first team from Cape Breton to win the Timber Cup.
The annual boys high school hockey tournament is hosted each year by the Par-en-Bas Sharks and the Yarmouth High Vikings, both did not make the final four.
Sharks head coach Julien Boudreau says it was still a great weekend.
“It’s a big fundraiser for us, and it wouldn’t happen without all of our volunteers and parents. A big thanks to them for stepping up, along with MC Media on the livestreams, and Alain LeBlanc and Brian ‘Sumo’ Comeau for picking our game MVPs,” said Boudreau.
Sharks defender Cayden d’Eon was named a tournament all-star, along with the Vikings’ Shu Kawaguchi at forward.
Ten teams took part in the 17th annual tournament.
