It’s almost time for the Timber Cup in Yarmouth.
Ten boys high school hockey teams will battle for the trophy this weekend at Mariners Centre.
Head Coach of the co-host Yarmouth High Vikings Jake MacLeay says volunteers, parents and the team have been working hard.
“The community is amazing with sponsorships and helping out, they’ve donated food and gift cards, and parents and volunteers are so great too. I think we’re ready to go, and we’re going to have a great weekend,” said MacLeay.
He adds it will be a strong tournament, and he wants the Vikings to compete hard in each game.
Three other regional teams are taking part, the co-host Par-en-Bas Sharks, the Clare Loups and the Digby Mariners.
The Sharks are co-hosting with the Vikings, and head coach Julien Boudreau says the players are excited.
“It’s the same as any other game, same rink and same dimensions, you just have to play hockey. Until you look up and see all those fans, that’s what makes it special,” said Boudreau.
The Sharks last won the championship in 2022.
Action gets underway on Friday morning, the championship game is scheduled early Sunday afternoon.
Other teams taking part include Ecole NDA/Cape Breton Highlands, Sydney Academy, Bay View, Forest Heights, Eastern Shore and West Kings.
Local area schools will attend the first two games on Friday between PEB and Clare, and Yarmouth and Digby.
