Nick Hilton is officially Yarmouth’s new MLA.
The provincial election ballots for the riding were recounted in court Tuesday.
The end result saw Hilton defeat incumbent and Liberal leader Zach Churchill by 16 votes, up from 14.
Hilton, a first-time candidate for the Progressive Conservatives says it’s been a humbling experience.
“At the end of the day, the community needs to know that every vote counts. This is an exciting time for myself and my family, and I’m excited for the opportunity to represent this area,” said Hilton.
The Liberals requested the recount due to inconsistencies in the reporting of results on election night.
Hilton will be in attendance as MLAs are sworn in Tuesday.
“Being on this side of government will make a difference, I know that, and I hope the community knows that. I’m looking forward to moving forward in a positive way.”
As for what happens with his council seat in District 7 of the Municipality of Yarmouth, Hilton says he will officially resign.
He says a by-election will likely be held in the new year.
Meanwhile, the Liberals say Churchill will hold a news conference with re-elected MLAs’ Derek Mombourquette and Iain Rankin in Halifax at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
