Meteghan RCMP are working to solve a string of violent crimes in Clare.
Earlier this week, a man already in custody on a second-degree murder charge was charged with arson from an incident last December.
More incidents of arson and gunfire from this year remain under investigation, including the burning of an RCMP vehicle.
Superintendent Jeff Popik, officer in charge of Southwest Nova Scotia says they’re working to identify what’s related to organized crime in the illegal lobster fishery.
“Whenever we have economic or financial opportunities in an area, it attracts criminality and those who try to exploit it. That’s what we’re trying to disentangle,” said Supt. Popik.
He says there’s a degree of anxiety in the community, and people are scared to voice their concerns.
“People aren’t speaking out for fear of retribution. The police were able to drive this investigation forward, get the evidence and lay the charge. I hope this reinforces the strength of RCMP in the community.”
Supt. Popik adds the officers are doing great work, and they’ll continue to focus on the investigations.
He adds they want to collaborate with DFO to identify those who are exploiting the fishery on and off the water.
“We’re looking at that organized crime aspect, and will be exploring that over the coming months,” added Supt. Popik.
