One of the men serving a life sentence in the murder of Yarmouth’s Colton Cook is appealing his conviction.
Robert Rogers, who is now in his early 60s, will stand in front of three judges Tuesday at the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.
In March, 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 19 years in the September, 2020 murder of the 26-year-old.
Cook was shot and stabbed to death at a residence in South Ohio, his remains were found days later on Saunders Road.
Rogers is making the appeal, as he feels the Supreme Court judge made mistakes in instructions to the jury about the testimony of a key Crown witness.
Cook’s mother Stacey Cook says she’s known for a while that Rogers would appeal the conviction.
She says last week was the four year anniversary of Colton’s burial.
“It took so long to get his body back. It’s just bad timing overall, with the emotions of everything else,” Stacey Cook told Acadia News.
She thanks the community for their support, and keeping her son’s memory alive.
“I still get messages from Colton’s friends, always on Mother’s Day and his Dad on Father’s Day, and at Christmas. He had a great bunch of friends. The community support has also been amazing.”
She says she’ll be watching the appeal hearing online.
Two other men were convicted in Cook’s murder.
Wayne Crawford was sentenced to life with no parole for 10 years, and Keith Siscoe Jr. was given three years for accessory after the fact to murder.
