The federal fisheries minister says Nova Scotia plays a big role in ending illegal lobster fishing.
In a letter to provincial fisheries minister Kent Smith, Diane Lebouthillier says any serious effort must include the regulation or elimination of cash sales, that responsibility falls under the province.
She says a lack of regulations around cash sales empowers criminals to manipulate and abuse those making an honest living.
Lebouthillier says she’s concerned about the rise in violent crime in southwestern N.S, and that the government is committed to fighting the underground economy.
The letter was sent Friday, two days after Smith sent his second letter to the feds demanding more enforcement on the water.
Lebouthillier says enforcement is happening, and commends officers for their hard work.
She says she committed in May to working with the Canada Revenue Agency and Public Safety Canada to detect and deter unreported commercial activity.
In his letter September 18, Smith said provincial officers have increased inspection and enforcement activities.
There is also an increased RCMP presence.
