Conservative MPs in Atlantic Canada say the feds are killing lobster stocks and endangering jobs.
They say the Trudeau government are allowing lobster poaching to run rampant in the Bay of Fundy.
Fisheries minister Diane Lebouthillier has said it’s wrong to assume enforcement is not happening.
West Nova MP Chris d’Entremont says what they’re seeing on the ground differs from what the minister is saying.
“It is her trying to respond to things that have no bearing on what’s happening in the Bay of Fundy. It’s all about the Gulf of St. Lawrence and her area, and nothing to do with Atlantic Canada,” said d’Entremont.
He says there has been no response from her department.
“There is no enforcement, there are illegal lobsters being shipped all over the place. We’re even getting messages from the province. Somebody from DFO should be providing an update on how to resolve these tensions.
Nova Scotia’s fisheries minister Kent Smith has also written to Lebouthillier for a second time.
In the letter, he says there’s been no communication from DFO on the issue, calling it ‘extremely disappointing.’
Lebouthillier has said enforcement is happening, and it may not always look the way people expect it to.
DFO say they continue to seize vessels and make arrests.
