It’s a dream come true for Wyatt Sanford of East Hants.
He’ll be the first Canadian in nearly 30 years to win a boxing medal at the Summer Olympics.
Sanford will fight in a semifinal match on Sunday morning, he’s guaranteed a bronze.
Speaking from the games in Paris, Sanford tells Acadia News that the job’s not done.
“I know we also want to upgrade the medal. Going for gold, I just need to have the game plan and execute, and the result will come,” said Sanford.
If he wins against his opponent from France, he’ll box for gold on August 7.
Sanford, who’s been dubbed the ‘Kennetcook Kid’ by his hometown says no matter the outcome, everyone is proud.
He says he’s been motivated and wants to be an inspiration.
“I don’t want to just reach out to up and coming boxers, I want to reach the younger generations. It doesn’t matter if you’re from the city or a small village like Kennetcook, if you work hard to accomplish your goals, you’re able to. It won’t pay off the next day, it’s about staying consistent.”
His next match starts at 7:30 a.m, a watch party is being planned once again at Findley Park in Kennetcook.
Sanford adds he’s excited to have his parents there, and his wife has just arrived in France for the next match.
Wyatt Sanford will become #TeamCanada’s first Olympic medallist in boxing in 28 years. 🇨🇦👏 https://t.co/51AeA3dNo4
