A new report on the state of municipalities in Nova Scotia from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
The report provides a ‘policy agenda’ for those considering running in October’s municipal elections.
It offers recommendations in six areas, including free public transit, building over 30,000 new affordable homes, and ending contracting-out and privatization.
Report co-author Kyle Buott says municipalities can lead the way to turn values of social and economic justice into concrete policies to improve people’s lives.
He says the report ensures that no one is left behind.
It also addresses the role the units can play in climate change, with a new climate action plan.
Report co-author Dr. Christine Saulnier says she encourages those running for municipal council to look at the report and steal some ideas.
She says the report provides tools, strategies and lessons learned that can be implemented once the new councils are elected.
