Paramedics in Nova Scotia are about to get some help.
The province says 14 emergency medical responders, ranging in age from 19 to 60 are now trained to work alongside paramedics.
They will assess, stabilize and take patients to hospital and even work in teams of two in emergency offload areas, to transfer low-risk patients.
They will also partner with a paramedic in an ambulance to increase the number of teams available to respond to a call.
Minister of Addictions and Mental, Brian Comer says this is a proud day.
“Having these responders in the field will ensure that Nova Scotians get the right level of care, allow paramedics to work to the top of their scope and reduce wait times.”
They are the first batch to complete the program and will join ambulance crews in a few weeks.
The second class is expected to graduate in August.
