New affordable housing is coming to the Town of Yarmouth.
The new units will be built on an empty lot on Shaw Avenue.
It’s a 24-unit development, construction is expected to begin in August and finish in late 2025.
John Hartling, senior manager of operations for the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia says it’s an important project.
“The need is here and across the province, especially in rural Nova Scotia. This project is hopefully the start of many more for us here,” said Hartling.
He says 14 of the units will be considered ‘deeply affordable’ and below market rates.
The buildings will also be ‘net-zero’ energy through solar power, meaning tenants won’t have a power bill.
“We’ll start accepting applications probably six months before construction wraps up,” added Hartling.
Tyler Strang, project manager with DORA Construction says they introduced the project in Yarmouth this week.
“With the benefits that it can offer the community, and we want to find local talent that will take this project from paper to an actual solution,” said Strang.
Strang says they’re currently working through the tendering process.
