A long-time Yarmouth area coach has been recognized by Hockey Nova Scotia.
Brian ‘Sumo’ Comeau won the Award of Merit for 2024.
Comeau announced his retirement after coaching for over 40 years in the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association.
He says it’s humbling.
“It’s really nice to be recognized after 40 years of volunteering my time. I thought it was someone playing a joke at first, I was shocked,” said Comeau.
Comeau has mentored many youth in the area, and says he’ll miss those connections.
“I’ll miss the dressing room and being around the players. I’ve had some great assistant coaches over the years like Gary Surette, Kelly McCarron, Alan Surette and guys who have been really close to me, I’ll miss that.”
But he will still be in attendance at Mariners Centre watching games.
He says his favourite memory was winning provincials with his friend Chris Newell.
