While many people are now living in tents around the province, safety is becoming a concern.
Minister of Community Services Trevor Boudreau says it’s up to municipalities and outreach workers to make sure those experiencing homelessness are ok.
“We recognize that all Nova Scotians deserve to live in a safe and warm environment and that is what we are gearing ourselves up to do, is support as many people who are experiencing homelessness as possible,” Boudreau said.
Boudreau added that when it comes to safety it’s the municipality who supplies outreach workers.
Concerns were raised after five tents were destroyed at a tent encampment by the Macdonald Bridge in Halifax last week.
Meanwhile, Premier Tim Houston told reporters he can’t comment on how the municipality chooses to govern itself and that the focus of the province is to get more construction built, faster.
Coming to Lower Sackville are 52 tiny homes, with an 30 expected to be ready for the summer and the final 22, in the fall.
There also 200 Pallet shelters on the way, with orders placed for 100 in HRM and another 100 across the province.
