Lobster fishers will set sail in LFA 33 and 34 to begin the fall lobster season.
Fish Safe NS wants to make sure safety is a priority.
They did a number of different drills in Yarmouth recently, including man overboard, fire, flooding, and medical emergencies.
Dylan Buchanan with Fish Safe NS says things can happen fast on the water.
“Everyday you’re out there, just be mindful. Aware of your surroundings. Make sure you’re not tangled up in a rope if you’re throwing traps, make sure you’re keeping an eye on each other. If somebody goes overboard, you’ll want to be able to point that out and get to them quick,” said Buchanan.
He says they’ll continue to promote wearing PFD’s and safety on the water.
Marilyn d’Entremont joined in, she lost her husband in 2004 when he fell overboard a fishing vessel.
Nearly 20 years later, she’s still promoting safety on the water.
“Everybody has a right to come back home. It’s already a dangerous way of living. You have to take precautions to make it the least dangerous you possibly can, “said d’Entremont.
