Sarah Mitton, a shot put athlete from Brooklyn, received the title of 2022 field athlete of the year by Athletics Canada, and was awarded the F.N.A. Rowell Trophy.
In June , Mitton became the first Canadian woman to throw over 20 metres in shot put, winning the senior women’s title at the Canadian track and field championships in Langley, B.C.
In August, she won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games by delivering a stunning effort in her final throw in Birmingham, England, with a distance of 19.03 metres. This win made her the first Canadian athlete to win a medal in athletics at the Commonwealth Games.
Recently, Athletics Canada announced its annual award winners and Mitton was recognized for her achievements.
She continued to make history in January of the following year by breaking the national indoor record in shot put. Mitton threw 19.40 metres in the opening round at the Can/Am Classic in Windsor, Ont., improving on the 19.16 metre mark she set in February of the previous year in New York. In her final attempt, she threw 19.80 metres, taking the world lead.
