Good Morning !
The official start to the Lobster fishery in this area ( LFA34 ) is usually the Last Monday of the month , this year however could be an earlier start if the weather Monday isn’t favorable.
I have always gone early in the morning to The Yarmouth Lighthouse to see the Lobster fishing boats leave on Dumping Day , there have been many cold and blustery years and many years with delays, this year being no exception.
A few years ago myself along with my friend Kevin Vallillee , we put on this display for Dumping Day.
( The Above Photo ) is along the giant rock wall below the lighthouse at Cape Forchu. It was probably about 20 feet tall and 60 feet long. It was done with four theatrical lighting fixtures with the words cut out of tin plates called gobos which then got inserted into each fixture in between the bulb and the focus lens ( Have A Safe And Prosperous Season ). All the Fishermen could read it as they steamed by the Lighthouse on their way to the rich lobster banks.
I will be the first to admit that my sea legs are not strong at all, with that being said I have had the experience of lobster fishing and found it was not for me. It takes a special kind of person to appreciate the sea and have the dedication of getting up early morning and working long hours in cold weather with your life being at risk daily .
The lobster Fishery is the backbone of numerous communities in Nova Scotia with Yarmouth being one of them. I have much respect for the Lobster Fishers of our area. Both Male and Female.
The safety of our fishers is of the utmost importance and DFO will have resources on had to aid in that
So I ask the question this morning.
Have you ever gone Lobster fishing ?
Would you if you had the opportunity ?
Do you know someone who does ?
