The Yarmouth Shark Scramble was held over the weekend.
Hundreds came to the Yarmouth waterfront on Saturday to see the weigh-ins.
There were 35 sharks landed on 12 boats, totaling over 8,700 pounds.
Organizer Bob Gavel says the sponsors and everyone that supported the event need to be thanked.
“Without our committee, the volunteers and financial support from local businesses, it wouldn’t be able to take place, “says Gavel.
The largest shark caught was 367 pounds, by Christian Deveau on the boat ‘Irvin John.’
Riley Crowell had the second biggest shark at 360 pounds, also caught on the ‘Irvin John.’
Lyndon Maddie got third place at 331 pounds, also caught on the vessel.
The Minnow Award went to Matthew Wood of the boat ’34 to Life,’ at 156 pounds.
There were over 100 participants.
The future of the tournament is uncertain, as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans no longer needs the event to conduct scientific research on sharks.
Gavel says he’s got meetings with DFO Science in the coming months.
“We’ll be discussing how we’re going to go about it, if we can go about it again.”
The event was originally under a recreational license, but has since been changed to a science license.
