A local elementary school principal is facing sex charges dating back 20 years.
Fifty-one year old Mark Alexander Thornton of Yarmouth was arrested on Tuesday and charged with sexual exploitation and sexual assault.
RCMP say the alleged assault happened between the fall of 2001 and the summer of 2002 in Yarmouth, when the victim was 14-years old.
Police say there may be more victims, and they are encouraged to come forward.
Thornton is currently the principal of Plymouth School in Arcadia.
In a statement to our newsroom, the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education says they’re taking this situation very seriously, and can confirm that an individual has been placed on administrative leave.
They say they’re fully cooperating with the RCMP investigation, and their priority continues to be the safety and well-being of students.
Thornton was released on conditions and is due in court on October 11th.
