Members of the Nova Scotia NDP have officially elected Dartmouth South MLA Claudia Chender as the province’s new party leader.
Online voting took place today while the Nova Scotia NDP convention is being held in Halifax. Chender ran unopposed for leadership of the party.
“Our tent is big, our vision is bold, and the future for Nova Scotia is very bright.” – Claudia Chender.
The former lawyer is a member of the Public Accounts, Assembly Matters, Internal Affairs, Law Amendments and Natural Resources and Economic Development Committees. She is also a member of the House of Assembly Management Commission.
The convention began Friday and is wrapping up tomorrow. Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh spoke at the convention after a visit to the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market this morning. Other speakers today were Halifax Recovery Society founder Julie Melanson, general manager of the Membertou Heritage Park Jeff Ward, executive director of Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia Justin Cantafio and social worker and sociologist Robert Seymour Wright.
Chender succeeds Gary Burrill as leader of the NSNDP. Burrill was first elected MLA for Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley in 2009. He was re-elected as MLA for Halifax Chebucto in 2017 and 2021.
Burrill announced he would be stepping down as leader of the party in November.
