A focus on protecting the Eastern Mountain Avens flower on Brier Island, Digby County.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada says 95 percent of the flower’s population is on the island.
Jaimee Morozoff with the NCC says they’re looking to add a 30 acre piece of land adjacent to the current nature reserve.
“It has an intact bog that serves as a reference point for a lot of restoration that’s going on, and it’s inter-connected with the water levels and things that are happening in the big bog on Brier Island,” says Morozoff.
She says while the flower isn’t found in these 30 acres, bog restorations help with future preservation.
“Otherwise the flower could be eliminated from the world. The island is such a unique piece of Nova Scotia and that plant is closely associated with it.”
The NCC created the Brier Island Nature Preserve in 1988.
