The head of a local Facebook group helping Ukrainians is hoping more host families are found soon.
A plane with 300 Ukrainians aboard will arrive in Halifax tomorrow, and so far at least three host families have been found in the Tri-Counties.
Karen Ward with the Southwest Nova Scotia Hosts Ukrainians group says the demand is there.
“Daily, we get two to three Ukrainian families ask us for a place to stay, just for the interim until they become employed and independent,” says Ward.
Ward says most are highly educated and willing to work any jobs.
“In an employee shortage in Southwest Nova Scotia with more jobs than workers, the difficulty really lies with finding hosts and homes for the Ukrainians to fill those jobs.”
She hopes to see employers open up positions for Ukrainians, and for more people to help them settle in any way possible.
If you can’t offer up your home, Ward says there are other ways to help, including transportation, employment opportunities and fundraising.
