Photos have surfaced online showing a large amount of dead gaspereau washed up along the bank of the Tusket River.
In a statement to our newsroom, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans says they became aware of reports of a fish mortality event on the river on May 17.
After initial inspection, DFO says it appears adult gaspereau were stranded in an isolated pool adjacent to the Nova Scotia Power Powerhouse on the Tusket River, after entering it during a high tide event early last week.
Nova Scotia Power says operations at the Tusket Hydro System have run as they normally would, keeping water levels at the appropriate level throughout the fish migration season.
DFO says staff continue to monitor and assess the situation, and are working with NS Power on fish passage on the Tusket River system.
NS Power says protection of the environment, fish and fish habitat is very important to them.
