Tax rates in the Town of Yarmouth are increasing by two cents.
The residential rate is going up to $1.69 per $100 of assessment, and the commercial rate will be $4.31 per $100.
Mayor Pam Mood says council never wants to increase taxes.
“We keep costs down as low as possible, but inflation is everywhere, and everyone is wearing that. We do our best to bring a budget that everyone can live with,” says Mood.
She says the increase will give the town an extra $88,000, as their costs have increased by around one million dollars because of things like policing, insurance and fuel.
Mood says it’s a minimal cost for taxpayers, as it equates to 25 to 45 cents a week.
She says the town is the 11th lowest for rates among 25 towns in Nova Scotia for residential.
The $18.7 million dollar budget has a surplus of $5,000.
