A local municipality wants answers on new tax measures for non-resident home owners in Nova Scotia.
Municipality of Yarmouth council made a motion to write a letter to the provincial government.
Warden John Cunningham says they are extremely concerned.
“We were not engaged, informed or given notification that this was coming through. The Municipality of the District of Yarmouth, and all municipalities across the province would have liked to been engaged on this,” says Cunningham.
The new measures came into effect on April 1st, and tax two dollars per 100 dollars of assessed value of residential properties owned by non-residents.
Also, those from out of province who buy property and don’t move to Nova Scotia within six months must pay five percent of the property’s value in transfer taxes.
Cunningham says they want to know what the implications will be for out-of-province homeowners in Yarmouth County.
“Also, we’ll be engaging with our partners at the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities to all speak as one voice on this issue.”
