A Ukrainian man who now resides in Nova Scotia is going back to his country today.
Lex Brukovskiy, a lobster fishing captain who lives in Meteghan arrived in Poland near the border with Ukraine yesterday after a 36 hour journey.
He says his mission is to take funds into Ukraine to help his family and refugees however he can.
“Most likely the money will go into medical supplies, and housing for refugees. I’m in Warsaw right now, there are no hotels available, all the rooms are filled by Ukrainians fleeing the country,” says Brukovskiy.
He says he checks in with his family everyday, and they are doing okay after their area was bombed by Russian forces.
He says funds have been raised for his journey by many fishermen in the area, and is thankful for their generosity.
“A lot of people donated money aside from the fundraiser too, fishermen have been donating cash and sending me cheques, and messaging me and texting me. I am now gathering the funds to help.”
Brukovskiy says he arranged a replacement with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans so his crew can continue fishing.
He has two sons here in Nova Scotia, and says he’ll see them again soon.
But he says he’ll be at the border as long as it takes.
There is a crowdfunding website where people can donate funds.
