The clang of pots and pans could be heard loud and clear at Université Sainte-Anne today.
Striking professors and librarians gathered at the university for a ‘Tintamarre’ style parade to protest the decision made by administration to close the student cafeteria.
They walked off the job last week, as talks on a new collective agreement with the university remain far apart.
Spokesperson for the protesters and director of the French Studies Department Jean Wilson described what they want from the university at this point.
“Nothing but dialogue because it hasn’t moved, it’s totally closed,” said Wilson. “Where it has to be a dialogue, for them, the only rebound we get all the time is ‘no no no’ on everything we propose. So ipso facto, it’s not a dialogue, it’s a monologue.”
Gathering outside the university, Professor Dr. Darryl Whetter gave a ‘teach in’, calling back to student life in the 1970’s and used two songs, ‘Tubular Bells’ by Mike Oldfield and ‘We’re Not Going To Take It Anymore’ by Twisted Sister to relate to their situation.
The utensils used in the protest will be donated to students, for use in residence kitchenettes.
