It seems like only a few weeks ago I started seeing those little icons for Wordle Results pop up on my newsfeed, and I wondered, “What’s this?”
Then they started getting more numerous until it seemed like everyone was playing the little word game.
Guess I’m late to the party.
Last week I got Kevin Northup to explain to me what Wordle was and show me how it was played.
It’s a word game where you have six chances to figure out the five letter word. If a letter turns out GREEN you’ve got the right letter in the right place. If it’s YELLOW it’s a letter in the word, in the wrong place. If it’s GREY then it’s not a letter.
There’s a new puzzle every day and you play it HERE.
A little bit of trivia I picked up: It was invented by former Reddit software engineer Josh Wardle – thus the name “Wordle”.
News just came out that it’s been purchased by the New York Times – the home of the famous New York Times Crossword – and will remain free, at least “for now”.
It will be moved to the NYT site, and Wardle says that he’s working with The New York Times to preserve players’ existing wins and streak data once the game heads to its new home.
Whether it will remain free remains to be seen, but the New York Times paid “an undisclosed price in the low seven figures” to own it. Wardle said he’s been a bit overwhelmed keeping the puzzle running daily, as he was the only one doing it.
I haven’t gotten into playing it yet. How about you?
