A clean-up of the Bunkers Island shoreline in Yarmouth is scheduled for this Sunday.
Weather permitting, it will begin at noon, and proof of vaccination is required to attend.
Scotian Shores, a group that’s committed to clean oceans and reducing plastic waste are helping to organize the afternoon, along with Yarmouth Shores and the Clean-Up Project.
Founder Angela Riley says over two tonnes of waste has already been removed from Bunkers Island, but more needs to be done.
“We’re really hoping to get around some areas we haven’t tackled yet, the further away parts of the island to get some of the rope and old fishing gear that’s washed ashore. We have some folks with ATV’s coming to help us as well,” says Riley.
She says Scotian Shores have helped to remove about 100,000 pounds of garbage from the province’s shorelines over the last year and a half.
If the weather is poor, the clean-up will be moved to next weekend, and the start time could be changed depending on tide times.
