I was watching Macbeth on Netflix over the weekend and it mad me realize how many words in the English language are no longer used and phrases that were common speak at the time are now no longer used or totally forgotten.
The term Archaic as defined by Merriam Webster : having the characteristics of the language of the past and surviving chiefly in specialized uses. / More definitions can be found HERE
The language of that time period was truly remarkable and somewhat complicated at the same time, check the movie for yourself and you’ll see ” hear ” what I’m trying to explain.
Below is a list of words that are ” Archaic ”
➢ apothecary: a person who prepared and sold medicine
➢ baseborn: of low birth or social standing
➢ beldam: an old woman
➢ bootless: ineffectual; useless
➢ chicane: to deceive; hoodwink
➢ caducity: the infirmity of old age; senility
➢ fudge: nonsense
➢ gadzooks: an expression of surprise or annoyance
➢ grimalkin: a cat
➢ husbandman: a farmer
➢ jakes: an outdoor toilet
➢ picaroon: a scoundrel
➢ sea smoke: fog
➢ sweetmeat : an item of confectionery or sweet food
➢ tope: drink to excess
➢ trig: neat and smart
➢ yoke: the amount of land that a pair of oxen could plough in a day
➢ zounds: an expression of surprise or indignation
