The Municipality of the District of Yarmouth’s Planning Advisory Committee wrapped up a series of learning sessions on aquaculture last week.
They heard from a wide-range of professionals and citizens, as they consider an amendment to the land-use by-law and municipal planning strategy to allow more types of aquaculture activities in the area.
A company named Boreal Salmon has proposed an open-flow land-based salmon farm development for Chebogue Point.
Committee chair Trevor Cunningham says staff are reviewing aquaculture as a whole, not specific projects.
“Staff is doing their due-diligence, and will probably make an additional recommendation to the PAC. We’ll consider that at our next meeting, perhaps on December 14th,” says Cunningham.
Cunningham says the sessions were excellent and informative.
He says staff are reviewing the material, and the PAC won’t rush a decision.
