The Yarmouth Mariners got a big win on Indigenous reconciliation night.
They defeated the Amherst Ramblers 2-1 at Mariners Centre, thanks to goals from Reilly Mayne and Reid Vos.
Both teams wore ‘Every Child Matters’ jerseys, designed by the MHL.
Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says it was great to host the game.
“It was great to see so many people here. For our community, it means a lot, and it means a lot to us and the players to take part. It was very well done,” says Barron.
There was a pre-game ceremony with minor hockey players from the Acadia First Nation and Chief Deborah Robinson taking part.
Indigenous students from Yarmouth High and Maple Grove were also in attendance.
As far as the game goes, A.J. DiChiara made 23 saves for the victory, as the Mariners rebounded from a 4-1 loss at home to Pictou County Saturday.
Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says it’s always close against the Ramblers.
“It’s funny, we’ve played those guys four times, and every time it’s been decided by one goal. There’s not much between those teams. I’ve got a lot of respect for them, they’re very well coached. The fans won tonight, it was a playoff atmosphere.”
The Mariners tied Amherst for first in the Eastlink South Division with the victory.
Yarmouth plays at Truro Wednesday, in Pictou County Thursday and home to Valley on Friday night.
