Fish Safe NS have been preparing for the fall lobster fishing season in Southwestern Nova Scotia.
Representatives visited 71 wharves over the last three months to talk about safety on the water and perform man overboard drills.
Executive Director Matthew Duffy says the first line of defense is a personal flotation device.
“Folks that we meet in our travels that have fallen overboard, so many of them attribute a personal flotation device as the reason they’re still there talking to us today. If you don’t want to wear one for yourself, wear it for your family, who are counting on you to come home safe,” says Duffy.
Fish Safe NS also provides a free Wheelhouse Logbook to captains, to record safety initiatives.
They’re also offering mental health and wellness support for fishers.
