Another weekend split for the Yarmouth Mariners.
On Friday, despite firing 63 shots at Valley goaltender Antoine Lyonnais, Yarmouth lost 4-2 at home to the Wildcats.
On home ice again last night, the Mariners scored three quick goals to start the second period, and held on for a 5-2 win over the South Shore Lumberjacks.
Mariners co-captain Sam Gillis, with two goals on the night, talks about the win.
“We kind of had a slow start in the first. We wanted to put them away early, but we didn’t get the chance. When our chances did come, and when my chances came, we put it through the back of the net like we’re supposed to. It was a great team effort,” says Gillis.
Kieran Burke, Ben Charles and Reilly Mayne also scored, and Christophe Beluse got the win in goal, making 19 saves.
Gillis, who has been with the Mariners since the championship team of 2019 says Yarmouth has a formidable squad again.
“We’re a good team, we’re young and have a lot of new faces, but we’re fast and we play hard. The fans are back, too so we’re very excited for that.”
The Mariners sit one point behind Amherst for first place in the Eastlink South Division.
They’ll face the Ramblers on the road this Thursday, visit Truro Friday and host the Bearcats on Saturday night.
