A new community monument in West Pubnico, just in time for Remembrance Day.
It was installed yesterday at the same site as the previous one, just south of the Pubnico Legion Branch 66 on Highway 335.
Chairperson of the community monument committee Paul d’Entremont says the legion took on a project to replace it.
“It’s identical as identical could be. We’re not using beach stones and concrete, this time it’s granite. The committee of the West Pubnico Legion made recommendations to the membership, which were adopted,” says d’Entremont.
He says the four-sided monument has a plaque in memory of those who gave their lives, along with a new plaque to honour those who’ve served.
An engraved wreath is also featured along with a poppy, and a new section will honour women and all they’ve done for the community in war time and in peace.
The previous monument was built in 1951, to recognize the 200th anniversary of the first settlers in Pubnico.
d’Entremont says there will be a mass at 10 a.m. on Remembrance Day, followed by a service at 11 at the church.
Those who have purchased wreaths will be able to lay them at the new monument after the service.
Also, the Legion, with help from Musée des Acadiens des Pubnicos, adopted a project for the first time this year to put small Canadian flags on all the graves veterans buried in cemeteries in West Pubnico and Argyle.
