The Wedgeport Legion Branch 155 will hold an in-person Remembrance Day service this year.
It will take place at St. Michael’s Church in Wedgeport, with a mass at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11 a.m.
Masking and COVID-19 restrictions will be in effect.
Wreath laying will be a bit different this year, with only a few laid at the church. The rest will be placed at the cenotaph before the service.
Over the last week, many schools have helped place Canadian flags at veterans gravesites in the area.
Secretary of the legion Andre Boudreau says it’s a wide-ranging effort.
“We’ve got veterans from other communities that do the cemeteries we can’t get to, or the Community Pride Club at Maple Grove school. There’s a navy veteran and his wife that do all the cemeteries from Argyle to East Pubnico,” says Boudreau.
There will be no banquet once again this year, but a small reception will take place for Legion members only after the service.
Legion President Clinton Saulnier says it’s important to honour our veterans, including the few remaining from the Second World War.
“In 2016, we had 18 WWII veterans in our legion. We are down to six this year, the youngest is 95 and the oldest is 100,” says Saulnier.
He says the ceremony honours all veterans and those who have served past and present.
