The Town of Yarmouth is looking to wind up the Waterfront Development Corporation.
Formed in 1993 by the town, the corporation has turned Water Street from fully industrial into a tourist destination through many projects.
But council says it’s time to give it a broader mandate under an advisory committee.
Mayor Pam Mood says it would be a different form of governance.
“The same work would continue, just in a different manner. Council recommended that a terms of reference be developed for an advisory committee,” says Mood.
Mood says those who sit on the corporation are top notch individuals.
“But extra costs in having a separate entity and the fact that council does most of its work through advisory committees are factors. We want to ensure that people know the same work will get done.”
Mood says they will have discussions with members of the corporation.
The recommendations were made at last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, and will have to go through council for final approval.
