It’s Fire Prevention Week in Canada.
This year’s theme is ‘Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.’
Yarmouth fire chief Mike Deveau says it’s important for adults and children to know the sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
“Understanding when a battery is dying in a smoke alarm, or in a carbon monoxide alarm. They make that little chirp, so it’s important to understand what that means,” says Deveau.
He says the units should be tested monthly, and the batteries should be changed when the time changes.
Deveau says every ten years, the units should be replaced.
With the weather getting cooler, Deveau also reminds citizens to have their chimney cleaned and inspected.
“It should be cleaned on a regular basis. It’s a good time of year to start that rotation. The stove and pipes leading to the chimney should be cleaned and inspected yearly.”
He says getting a professional to clean and inspect your chimney is the best way to ensure that it’s safe for use.
Fire Prevention Week runs from October 3-9.
