The Yarmouth Mariners picked up three of a possible four points to open the MHL regular season.
On Friday, Yarmouth shutout Valley 3-0 in Berwick. AJ DiChiara made 28 saves, and goals were scored by Ryan Semple, Michael McQuaid and Alex Roode.
Saturday, the Mariners hosted nearly 800 fans in their home opener, but fell to Campbellton 4-3, 49 seconds into overtime.
Reilly Mayne scored all three Yarmouth goals, including the hat-trick goal on a penalty shot.
Mariners Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says they didn’t play a full 60 minutes on Saturday.
“I didn’t even feel like we lost the game in overtime, I felt we lost it in the second period. There was a six minute span where we played soft. We’ll learn from it though, I thought it was a pretty good effort against a good hockey club,” says Barron.
After the overtime goal by Daryk Dube-Plouffe, the Tigers celebrated right in front of the Yarmouth bench, a move Barron took issue with.
“Our league has gotten so much better. For the classless way that they won, I’d be embarrassed. It was embarrassing for our league and it was embarrassing for their club. They should be ashamed really.”
Yarmouth’s next game is Thursday in Amherst, before returning home Saturday to take on the South Shore Lumberjacks.
