An anniversary that’s out of this world for a Shelburne County community today.
54 years ago, on October 4th, 1967, witnesses claim they saw an unidentified flying object with bright lights disappear into the waters off Shag Harbour.
The Shag Harbour UFO Incident Society is keeping the story alive, and held an event over the weekend at the Shag Harbour Incident Interpretive Centre.
Chris Styles, a member of the society and investigator of the incident says it’s part of Canadian history.
“It’s often referred to now as Canada’s most famous and important case. It speaks to the kind of interest that’s still out there. I would say there’s more interest in the case from outside of Canada than within,” says Styles.
Styles says the incident is a powerful argument for ‘UFO reality.
“Once people become aware, they realize the significance of this event. There’s no controversy on the origin of it, there are many documents freely available. It’s been welcome with open arms in the field, because Shag Harbour has elevated the conversation that these things do happen.”
He’s authored books on it, and there are a number of TV specials and articles available on the issue.
