The Yarmouth Mariners begin their 20th season in the MHL tonight, as they visit the Valley Wildcats.
The team named their leadership group yesterday, with defenseman Kaleb Boudreau and forward Sam Gillis sharing the captaincy.
Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says it was an easy choice.
“They are two guys back from the championship year (in 2019.) They’re excited, and they know how to win. Being a captain in hockey is probably the most important in any sport,” says Barron.
Hunter Livingston and Kurtis Lang will be alternate captains.
Barron says his team overall is strong, especially on defense.
“Nice mix of veterans with a lot of size. Up front, we’ll have to work hard and get offence from all four lines. I like our mix so far.”
Tonight’s game gets underway at 7 p.m.
The Mariners home opener will take place tomorrow night at 7:30 against the Campbellton Tigers.
Barron says he’s ready to see the Fishtank packed.
“It’s been too long. The atmosphere that everyone talks about, not just our players but around the league, everyone enjoys playing here. If we can get the Fishtank back to where it was, that would be awesome. Let’s hope we get 1,000 plus fans and get back to the way things were.”
The Mariners Centre will be following the ‘proof of vaccination’ policy for tomorrow and all games going forward.
