The Yarmouth Mariners wrapped up exhibition play on Friday night with a 3-2 overtime win over Valley at Mariners Centre.
Sam Gillis potted the game winning goal with less than a minute to go in the extra frame on the powerplay, Reilly Mayne and Ben Roode had the other Yarmouth goals.
The regular season begins this Friday, and Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says the roster will go through some changes prior to the trade deadline in January.
“I think to compete with the big boys, we’ll need to add a couple more pieces. Guys are competing for ice-time, I like our effort, but we’re probably a defenseman and a forward away,” says Barron.
Christophe Beluse got the win in goal.
Barron says the game was exciting for the fans.
“(The excitement) is coming back. You can feel it, and I know the players were excited. It was like a horse race, I’m not sure it was the fastest, but the game was close. I didn’t love our first period, but we played better the rest of the game. We’re going to have a good week of practice and get ready for the real season.”
Yarmouth begins the season on the road in Valley this Friday, then will host Campbellton in their home opener Saturday.
