The Town of Yarmouth wants in on an off-highway vehicle pilot project through the province.
The project allows communities to enhance trail connectivity for the vehicles.
Right now, no off-highway vehicles are allowed on town streets.
Mayor Pam Mood says a proposal has been written to the province.
“Economically, it’s the best thing that we could do for this town right now. We could have hundreds of vehicles here, and people eating in restaurants and staying in hotels. We are sending a proposal to the province, and fingers crossed that they accept it,” says Mood.
When the pilot project was created in 2018, the town requested to be included, but ultimately weren’t chosen.
The project ends next week, but if the date is extended, the town would want to be added to the list.
The town plans to designate specific areas for vehicle use, one particular spot would be the end of the trails on Water Street to the wastewater plant.
“You can have bicycles, motorcycles and other motorized vehicles. We just don’t see the problem, and we’re hoping the province sees it the same way,” adds Mood.
The town would also collect data through an education and public engagement campaign to help with future decisions on off-highway vehicles on Yarmouth streets.
