The Municipality of Yarmouth’s Planning Advisory Committee wants to hear more about aquaculture.
As part of a learning plan approved at Tuesday’s meeting, the committee will hear from experts from the industry, environment and communities where aquaculture takes place.
The committee is considering potential changes to the land-use by-law and municipal planning strategy that would allow more types of aquaculture activities.
Boreal Salmon wants to develop an open-flow, land-based salmon farm in Chebogue Point, and they will have a representative at the sessions to discuss the proposed project.
PAC Chair Trevor Cunningham says the sessions will benefit everyone.
“It’s a well-rounded group of experts to further inform the Planning Advisory Committee as to their decision about the municipal planning strategy and land-use by-law,” says Cunningham.
Cunningham says the sessions will be open to the public, and they’re currently deciding on whether or not to hold them virtually or in-person.
“COVID has complicated matters considerably. We’ll have those conversations on how best to aid public participation.”
Many in the community are opposed to Boreal Salmon’s plan, citing too many risks to fish stocks and the environment.
