It looks like backyard fires will soon be allowed in the Town of Yarmouth.
Council continued to work on a proposed open-air burning by-law at last night’s meeting.
A motion was made to get rid of barriers in the proposed by-law that were designed to keep smoke away from neighbouring buildings like schools and nursing homes.
Mayor Pam Mood says this would allow all property owners to have fires.
“It just didn’t sit right with council that for example, ten people on the street could have a fire, but two couldn’t. We decided to go this way, with the understanding that we can certainly re-visit the by-law if it’s an issue,” says Mood.
Mood says there will be several restrictions and regulations, and burn permits will be needed from the town.
“There will be times and days that you can start a fire, times they have to be out, and if you’re a tenant, you can’t get a permit, your landlord would have to take care of that.”
Council is expected to table the by-law at next month’s council meeting, and feedback from the public is welcome.
