The Town of Yarmouth wants to talk affordable housing with their neighbours.
At last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, a recommendation was made for council to have quarterly discussions on the issue with other municipal units in the Tri-Counties.
Mayor Pam Mood says affordable housing is a provincial and federal issue, but they want to help.
“The town cannot build housing, all we can do is set the table and make the community a place where people want to come in and do business, which is what we’re doing,” says Mood.
According to a recent report by NSBuzz.ca, the town leads the province in what they’re putting into affordable housing, thanks to a planned development project at the former Yarmouth high school on Parade Street.
The town is contributing $650,000 toward the project, matching provincial funding for the 54 mixed-housing development.
Mood says they hope to see it completed as quickly as possible, but the timeline is up to the developers.
“It’s not a quick fix. We certainly have to look after the housing that we have, and folks have to make sure they’re doing the upkeep on their properties, and we’re doing everything we can.”
