Four local baseball players will represent Nova Scotia on the U16 girls provincial team.
Michelle Saulnier, Marissa Fevens, Sophie Thimot and Caitlin Graves will take the field this weekend in Summerside, PEI during Atlantics.
Saulnier, from Yarmouth, has been playing for just three years, and has made the provincial squad two years in a row.
She says she’s inspired by her cousin, Yarmouth’s Allie Munroe, who plays professional women’s hockey, as well as her coaches.
“Coaches Scott Jeffrey and Curtis Falls have trained me to be a power-hitter and pitcher. My coaches are the main reason I’ve made the team the last two years. My dream is to play in the national championships against the best girls in the country, and I’ll never give up on my dream,” says Saulnier.
Thimot, a multi-sport athlete from Saulnierville plays the infield and a little bit of outfield.
She says she’s been playing baseball in Weymouth for the last four years.
“My coach in Weymouth, Jason Addington, he’s coached me for quite a while now, and he’s helped me make the team. It’s cool to see so many girls playing now (with the 12U team.) In my age group, we only had few girls playing, and now there’s a whole team,” says Thimot.
She has also been recruited by Kings Edgehill in Windsor to play hockey as a goaltender.
Fevens from Argyle has been playing baseball for six years as a catcher, and credits her brother with motivating her to the next level.
Graves, an infielder from Port Maitland, is in her third year, and is looked upon as a team leader.
The girls and Team Nova Scotia will take on Newfoundland, New Brunswick and PEI tomorrow through Sunday.
