It was a great weekend for the Yarmouth 12U Girls Gateways baseball team.
They played in their provincial tournament in Halifax, and went undefeated, setting up a game for the provincial title.
The group represents the first all-female rep baseball team from Yarmouth to play in the Bluenose League.
Head Coach Dr. Chris Murphy says it’s important for the area.
“Being a father of four girls, I really like the opportunity that’s been provided for girls to play. My girls have always played co-ed baseball, this is the first time they’ve got to play with other girls. I think that’s an important opportunity to have,” says Murphy.
Murphy says it’s a developmental league, and the team started with a few players, but now has grown to 12.
Assistant coach Curtis Falls says this is a great first step.
“It’s been very successful from a participation standpoint, as well as the talent level. I’d like to see this carry forward more age groups,” says Falls.
Falls says it’s great for the health of baseball in our area.
Murphy says they’re hoping to start a 15U group next summer.
