The Town of Yarmouth amended a by-law that prevents election signs from being put up.
At last night’s meeting, council voted to allow the signs to be installed on private property.
The ban on signs being put up on public property remains.
Mayor Pam Mood says the original by-law was done with the best of intentions.
“Many folks can’t afford the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of signs, and we thought that may be keeping people from running, which isn’t democratic. Signs don’t vote, they’re bad for the environment, the list is long. But we also matched that with people’s rights to have signs on their own property,” says Mood.
Mood says during the provincial election, a ‘stay of enforcement’ was put on the by-law and no fines were handed out.
The original by-law came into effect one year ago.
